AAVE in television

AS I sat and thought about what I could talk about for my last blog post, the only thing that kept through my head was AAVE language, and how so many people try to speak this dialect when in African American culture it is second nature.  In television ther are even mocking the AAVE dialect.  One of the shows that it is constantly mocked is the Boondocks.  This show is mocked from the black community/culture and they constantly use the AAVE dialect.  They also use lannguage of the african american culture, suck as the N word.  Posted is a clip of a boondocks scene so that more can understand.  

Everybody Speaks a Dialect

In Chaika chapter seven, this chapter speaks on how everyone has a certain dialect that they speak.  Not all are the same but everyone is categorized into one.  As I was going through this chapter this one particular person kept coming across my mind becasue I cant figure out the dialect that they speak.  My mom was on a phone interview and the person that she was interviewing was asian.  We could tell she was because of her asian accent, but this lady also had a southern accent.  From this it was very hard to understand what she was saying and at the same time it was very shocking to hear becasue I had never heard anyone with an asian accent but southern as well.  Becauses of her southern accent, that would be categorized under AAVE but combing them both gives a new type. 
My question would be how is this type of dialect.language categorized?

Kinesics connection

The connection that I am making to the Chaika term Kinesics.  This term is the style and body motions through communication.  I am connecting this to black girls.  Me being a black girl I have always heard people say that when we talk, especially when we have a attitude we tend to roll our heads and point our fingure.  I do notice that alot of times that this is a way that alot of young girls talk, and it starts young.  I have a 5 year old niece and she seems to have alot of attitude when she is talking.  What this has to do with the term kinesics is that in this particular culure these young girls have a certain style of the way they talk.  I guess my question would be what other type of kinesics do other cultures have?

I Love you, Man!..Communication Connection

   In the movie I Love You, Man, the actor Lonnie had a very high pitched voice.  They use his high pitch in a funny way, because usually a man does not have such a high voice.  Throughout the entire movie, he has this very sqeaky high voice that keeps it interesting to watch him.  The scene I used here is when he is at a game and is trying to lead the crowd to do a chant.

  According to Chaika, "Pitch, is how high or low your voice is, and physiological correlate of age, or culture" (pg.71).  In this movie Lonnie had a very high pitched voice and it was not because of his age.  In the SPEAKING acronym the SETTING was at a game.  This makes the whole scene funnier because with Lonnies high voice he tries to lead a large group of people when he can barely be taken serious with his voice.  Because of his voice, iot sets his identity, which makes him stand out from others because she has such a unique pitched voice, that if anyone was to ever hear his voice they would know it was him because that is part of his identity.
 
 A question that I have is why does society categorize people in certain ways, which having this high pitched voice for Lonnie will cause him to be categorized in a feminine or childish way, when its just part of who he is?

In this video clip from "The Wall Street Journal", from the super bowl commercials where Doritos is selling their product nacho cheese doritos.  In the commercial there are three different men.  One is a African American, and the other two are white men.  During the commercial one guy is finishing up his bag of chips while the other guy is off to the side asking for some of the chips.  He states he missed the best part and sucked the chips off his finger.  Then this guy runs into another man eating his chips and the guy wipes the crumbs onto his pants so the begging guys rips his pants off and start sniffing the mans pants. The guy who asks for the chips is the one who is always searching for some.  He states how great they are and that people are leaving the best part which is the crumbs because that how "good" the chips are.  There are different messages that are being put out which is first doritos are being sold.  That is the main purpose of the commercial so that the product will get sold, and secondly in my opinion they are showing some homosexuality.  That in here is the non verbal message through the commercial because we see the actions that are taking place and most people would categorize that as "homosexual acts". 
That was a way for them to try to get viewers attention so that their product could be sold.  I feel like they did a good job with selling their product in the commercial because it did grab your attention, there was just other messages that was within the commercial that was not just the product itself.

"Simple"

From the last discussion that we had in class, I learned that many words may have different meanings, but in some way they all relate to one another.  This could be because life is very simple its just we make it harder than what it should be.  With that, my word that I had discussed with my group was "simple".  I choose this word because it is a word that holds alot of meaning within my life.  One I always try to make things as simple as they can be because I feel there is no reason to make it difficult when theres another way thats easier.  This word also means alot to me because I am always told that I am a very simple person.  It doesnt take much to please me, and when it comes to fashion I am very simple.  I like to also call myself simple minded at times, because I dont really think outside the box.  I know that that isnt really a good character to hold but it's just how I have always been.
 We also discussed devil terms and God terms in class, and I feel that this term is a God term.  This in my opinion is a God term because "God- terms" are words that we live by, and although the word simple, isn't necessarily a term we live by, its a way if life.  It isn't really a term that is negative.  In what ways can simple be used as a devil term?
